Review 3: Linda’s Road Trip Adventure In Oman With Friends [VIDEO]

Tips To Help For Your Rooftop Tent Adventure In Oman

To help you make the most of your own Omani 4×4 rooftop tent adventure, I’ve put together some tips and ideas based on our experience. Of course, when you book with iDrive4x4, you’ll also receive a detailed pre-departure document that covers packing lists, ATM locations, supermarkets, and more!

• The iDrive4x4 team is friendly, clear in their communication, and super helpful. Picking up the car was quick and easy, and they did a great job explaining everything we needed to know. It was reassuring to know we could reach them easily if anything came up.
• If you’re planning to enjoy an alcoholic drink while camping, make sure to buy your favorite beverages at the duty-free shop before leaving the airport. You can’t purchase alcohol anywhere else in Oman, but it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a drink when you’re camping in a secluded spot away from locals.
• Driving in Oman is a breeze. The highways are modern, clean, and there’s not much traffic. With the off-road guidebook and GPS, it’s easy to navigate and explore the country. If the roads are more challenging and you go off-road you can pick routes according to your driving abilities.
• Speaking of the off-road guidebook—this is a must-have! It not only makes planning your routes easier but also allows you to stay flexible and adjust your plans on the go. On our last day, we decided to switch to a shorter route, and thanks to the guidebook, it was a smooth change. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to read and plan your trip with it before you even set out.
• Don’t overdo it on your first day. You’ll be in nature within an hour of leaving Muscat, but we were glad we kept our first day’s drive short. This gave us plenty of time for shopping and arriving at our campsite with enough daylight to set up the rooftop tent, explore and cook.
• One week was wonderful, but a bit short—I’d recommend 10 days to two weeks to really explore the different routes and experience the most Oman has to offer.
• If you’re heading to Wahiba Sands, be prepared for the sand—it gets everywhere! Keep the 4×4 car doors closed when it’s windy, also set up the rooftent once you go to bed. And consider making dinner in advance or grabbing takeout, as cooking in a sandy wind can be tricky. We grabbed some delicious Indian takeout from Bidiya, and it was perfect.
• Beware of speed bumps! Many of them are nearly invisible because the white markings have faded over time. Drive slowly and keep an eye out for these sneaky bumps.
• Don’t forget your swimsuits on hikes! We missed out on swimming in crystal-clear water twice because we left our swimsuits behind. Always bring them with you—just in case!
