Why Are Some Roads In Kyrgyzstan Off-Limits For Our 4x4s With Rooftop Tents?
Kyrgyzstan is a dream destination for adventurers. It offers stunning mountain landscapes, remote valleys, and rugged dirt roads leading to incredible locations. However, not all roads are suitable for our 4×4 vehicles with rooftop tents. In fact, some routes are completely off-limits. And for good reason. Here’s why we don’t allow our vehicles on certain roads in Kyrgyzstan; it’s for your safety and to ensure you have an enjoyable off-road adventure.

Why Are Some Roads In Kyrgyzstan Off-Limits For 4×4 Cars With iDrive4x4?
1. Safety First: No Assistance Possible
We prioritize your safety above all else. Some roads in Kyrgyzstan are so remote and treacherous that, in the event of a breakdown or an emergency, we cannot send assistance. If you get stuck on one of these roads, it could take an entire day (or more) to get back to civilization. Additionally, some of these roads lead into areas with little to no mobile signal. If something happens, you won’t be able to call for help and may have to walk long distances (sometimes up to 40 km!) to find reception. You would be on your own, with no help available for towing or mechanical repairs. This is not just an inconvenience; it can be a serious safety risk, which is why we make these roads off-limits.
2. Unpredictable Terrain & Extreme Conditions
Many of these restricted roads are in areas where terrain conditions change unpredictably, every season. Landslides, rockfalls, river crossings, or washed-out sections can make them impassable, even for a well-equipped 4×4. What might appear as a road on a map could, in reality, be nothing more than a dangerous, crumbling mountain trail. Don’t trust Google Maps that a road is accessible. Trust our advice: our local manager is updated on a regular base about the road conditions.
Sometimes it’s not an entire road that is dangerous, just parts of it. Like the Karkara Valley. But where do we draw the line for our travellers? If parts of the road are okay and parts are dangerous, for us that means the road is dangerous in general. A lot of our travellers are not experienced off road drivers. Some people might be driving a 4×4 car for the very first time in their lives. We don’t want to stress people out by saying that parts of the road are okay, and parts will give you an anxiety attack.

3. Google Maps is Not Always Reliable
While Google Maps is a useful tool for navigation in some countries, it is not always accurate in Kyrgyzstan. Some roads that appear on Google Maps do not actually exist, and others that were passable last season may now be completely washed out or inaccessible due to landslides or collapsed bridges. Do you really want to cross that river because the bridge collapsed, but Google Maps says you can still use that road? The Arabel Plateau is a good example of that.
Relying solely on digital maps can lead travelers into dangerous situations in countries like Kyrgyzstan. That’s why we have local experts who know the roads inside and out. Their firsthand knowledge ensures that we can guide you to the safest and most reliable routes. Check out our navigation tools for more information.
4. Damage to Vehicles & Equipment
Attempting to drive on these forbidden roads significantly increases the risk of damaging the vehicle and the rooftop tent. Roof racks, suspension, and even the engine can suffer extreme wear and tear from deep ruts, large boulders, and unstable surfaces. We want you to enjoy your adventure without the hassle of expensive repairs or unexpected setbacks.
5. Time-Consuming Detours
Getting stuck or taking a wrong turn onto a prohibited road can cost you an entire day or more. Most of our travellers have a travel itinerary that doesn’t expect 1-2 days of detouring. Instead of spending your time enjoying Kyrgyzstan’s incredible landscapes, you could find yourself dealing with an exhausting and frustrating recovery situation. That’s time lost from your adventure, and it’s completely avoidable by following the designated routes.

Forbidden Roads List: Check Before You Go
We created a map that shows all the routes that are off-limits in Kyrgyzstan, for your own safety and the equipment as well. You can find the map of forbidden routes in Kyrgyzstan for iDrive4x4 here.
Before the season in Kyrgyzstan starts (every April) we go through this list of forbidden routes and evaluate. On top of that during the season our local manager gives us updates when routes change from being adventurous to being dangerous. For example: this summer (2026) we added the Tosor Pass to our list of forbidden roads, since the condition of the road got worse and multiple car accidents were reported in a matter of days.
We also send a reminder about these forbidden roads to all our travellers. A few days before your trip, you receive an email that includes essential route information. Within this, we provide this same link to an up-to-date map of roads that are off-limits to our vehicles. These roads are prohibited for valid reasons: they are unsafe, inaccessible, or simply don’t exist anymore. Even if you have a border permit, these roads remain off-limits for our 4x4s.
What happens when I drive on the forbidden roads? Can I get a fine?
First and most important: you put yourself and others at risk. We didn’t create this map with forbidden routes to annoy people for the fun of it. It’s to make sure people have a good experience while exploring Kyrgyzstan.
Please note that these roads are also mentioned in the terms and conditions of Kyrgyzstan. This means you break the contract by driving on these roads. If anything happens on these roads and there is damage, there is a good chance it won’t be covered by the car insurance. Which means, your road trip has become a very expensive road trip for no reason.
