Oman is about outdoors, and the best part is that you can pitch your car with rooftent wherever you want. Actually, camping is something extremely common among both locals and tourists. Instead of worrying about a robbery in the middle of the night, what you should be concerned about is the overwhelming hospitality. The locals are likely to approach you to offer dates or any kind of refreshment. And don’t be surprised if they tell you to camp in their garden. Moreover, if you go camping on a weekend to a popular wadi or mountain. For example to Jebel Shams, you may find groups of Omanis who will likely invite you to sit with them over a barbecue.
Oman is a friendly and safe country to travel. Omanis are friendly and polite people. It is an Islamic country with a strict religious, moral and legal code. Crime of any type is severely punished. We advise you to respect religious and social traditions in Oman to avoid offending local sensitivities. Exercise modesty and discretion in both dress and behavior. Photography of government buildings or military establishments is prohibited – if in doubt, don’t take a picture.
Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. You should carry a photocopy of your passport or another form of identification at all times. Travelers in Oman should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
