We advise to never drive alone in the desert. Regardless of your experience, you should always have at least a 2 or 3 other cars with you. When you do go in the desert rent our recovery set so that you can deflate and inflate your tires and pull out cars that are stuck with a towing line. Our Off-Road Recovery sets contains: Air compressor | Deflator | Tyre pressure gauge | Towing line | Shackels for towing line | Jerrycan 20 liter | Jumper cable | Spare valves | Desert support jack plate | First aid kit | Tool set | Engine oil 1 liter If you travel just by yourself, we can organise a local guide to take you into the Wahiba Sands desert for 1 or 2 days. Check out our booking page for all the details.
You don’t need to know anything about 4x4 off-road driving before going on a 4x4 expedition tour with us, because our guides will show you how and adjust the off-roading to your skill level. For those who are renting 4x4 off-road cars, it depends on where you want to drive. Some terrains require no prior experience. If, however, you want to drive on dunes we certainly advise to have some previous experience. The more you know, the larger the amount of place you can go. There are also practicalities like deflating your tires. We provide all of this information, but you will have a much smoother trip if you either know about this already or look into it beforehand.
No, the license of your home country will suffice.

AWD drives the entire wheels all time whereas 4WD uses a driver selectable system that mechanically engages the drive to all four wheels. 4WD has direct mechanical link between front and rear axles which can be locked. Normally the drivers are advised to engage the 4 WD mode (H4)on slippery /sandy surfaces and to get more traction use the low 4WD (L4).
There is not much difference in ground clearance between the 4 WD types. However, Toyota Land Cruisers has bit more ground clearance than the other models.
It would be helpful to engage 4 WD (H4 - can shift in low spead) while driving Wadis (water bed) and Sand dunes and (L4 - Vehicle has to stop) while climbing the mountains or feel maximum traction required. If you have more than 2 persons traveling in your car a V6 engine is recommended particularly in the mountains.

Equipment & camping questions

No, the ice can be bought at supermarkets, gas stations, and other shops in Oman.
In our kitchen set we always provide a gas lighter to light the gas stove which you use to ignite a fire. Firewood can be bought at most supermarkets in Oman.
We don't recommend this option. We advice you to use the coolbox provided in the kitchen set and fill this up with ice cubes. This way your products stay much cooler. Electric cool boxes unfortunately only cool 20 degrees below ambient temperature.

This can mean before departure, but also during the trip. Moreover, the Guarantee Fund GGTO underwrites your return trip for the length of your stay if the tour operator, due to financial insolvency, can no longer take responsibility for this. Every package holiday dealer is legally required to provide a guarantee scheme such as this one (Civil Code 7 Article 7:512).

Most nationalities do. Read all about Oman visa regulations on our 'Oman Visa Information' page.
No. Your Oman visa is a single entry visa. So the moment you'll leave the country and want to re-enter, you will have to apply for a new visa. So keep this in mind in case you want to leave Oman to travel around the UAE for example. You may be better off purchasing a 10 day visa, which will be cheaper compared to a 30 day visa, as you cannot make use of your 30 days anyway the moment you leave Oman. Upon re-entering Oman you will have to purchase another 10 day visa.
