4×4 Offroad bundels in Uganda
Our offroad bundels always include a 4×4 vehicle, rooftop tent and full camping set. Prices are set per day and based on the type of 4×4 car you select, number of people in your booking and whether you add a ground tent to your bundle. The quantity of items in your camping set are based on the number of people in your booking. The bundle price starts at €150 per day for two persons including car insurance. The 4×4 bundles with rooftop tents can be rented from Entebbe, with the option to extend your trip into Kenya and Rwanda.

Please note: a small additional cross-border fee applies for each day spent in Rwanda or Kenya. Traveling into Kenya or Rwanda requires additional COMESA coverage and East Africa insurance, which we’ve made easy to arrange — so you’re covered by the same policy in all three countries.

Car Rental
All camping and off-road rental equipment will be installed and loaded in the rental car. Every order is prepared and double checked by our team to ensure you have everything you need for your expedition. The 4×4 car and all equipment will be delivered to you at your hotel.

The client must be over 23 years of age with a valid international drivers license. For drivers younger than 23 and older than 65 years old, a higher excess payable applies.

A pre-authorization will be made by the Rental Company on the driver’s credit card as security for traffic fines and excess liability of the insurance.

Car Insurance
All rental cars are provided with an insurance cover within the geographical area of Uganda. In case of any accident or damage an Excess Payment of USD 400 is applicable. Check out the full terms and conditions here.

Travel Insurance
We recommend SafetyWing travel insurance for additional medical and travel coverage, including up to $250,000 for medical emergencies and protection for trip interruptions, personal liability or lost luggage. Get a quote and make your 4×4 rooftop tent adventure worry-free.

Travel Documents
A valid passport, driver’s license from your home country and an international drivers license are required.

Driving Skills
There is no specific requirement for the years of driving experience or distance driven, but it’s always recommendable to have some experience and knowledge of driving in different terrains and road conditions, especially if you’re planning to explore the country off the beaten track. It’s important to comply with the local traffic laws and regulations, and to always drive safely.

Participation at Own Risk
Participation in off-road driving is completely at the traveler’s own risk. Because the traveler is responsible for (the consequences of) their own driving, the traveler should not take any roads or obstacles that the traveler does not feel comfortable or safe with.

Payment
A 20% down payment is required at booking, with the remainder due 6 weeks before the trip. GGTO guarantees reimbursement in case of tour operator insolvency.

Visiting the Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a highly sought-after experience, with strict regulations allowing only eight visitors per habituated gorilla family each day. To secure your spot, it’s essential to book your gorilla permit well in advance—ideally 4 to 6 months before your planned trek. This lead time is especially important during peak seasons, as permits are limited and in high demand.

Weather Conditions and Natural Forces
Uganda’s weather is generally pleasant, but it can change unexpectedly, especially during the rainy seasons. The regions where iDrive4x4 operates may experience heavy rains that can affect road conditions and planned activities. Travelers may need to adapt their itinerary, take alternative routes, or, in rare cases, shorten their trip for safety reasons. In such situations, iDrive4x4 will consult with you to ensure the best course of action. Additionally, natural forces such as floods or landslides may impact travel plans. While rare, being flexible and prepared is key to a smooth journey.

Respecting Local Customs and Cultural Norms in East Africa
East Africa’s rich culture and warm hospitality are highlights of any visit. To engage respectfully with local communities, keep these guidelines in mind:
– Dress Modestly: Wear appropriate clothing, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural villages.
– Photography Etiquette: Always seek permission before taking photos of individuals or cultural landmarks.
– Public Behavior: Ugandan society is generally conservative; avoid public displays of affection.
– Support Local Communities: Interact with locals respectfully and support ethical tourism initiatives that benefit the community.

Local Impact & Donations
For every order, we include a €10 donation per person, which goes directly to two local initiatives: the Kabaya Primary School Project at Lake Bunyonyi, and the Chris Roberts Forest Foundation, which focuses on reforestation in the Kibale Forest. If your route takes you nearby, you’re welcome to visit these projects and see where your donation is going.

Vaccinations & Health
To enter Uganda, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory. It’s also strongly recommended to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria (if not up-to-date), and Hepatitis B. A Rabies vaccination is advised for longer stays or rural travel. Malaria is present throughout the country, so taking malaria prophylaxis (such as Malarone, Lariam, or Doxycycline) is highly recommended. Be sure to also use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves in the evening. Always consult your doctor or a travel clinic at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.

Travelers to Uganda must obtain a visa prior to arrival. The Government of Uganda has implemented an online application system for all visa types. You can find the official website here.

Visit the Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System (here – visas.immigration.go.ug) to start your application. Select the appropriate visa type, such as Ordinary (Single Entry), Multiple-Entry, Diplomatic and Official, Transit, or the East Africa Tourist Visa.

Prepare the following documents for upload:
– A recent passport-size photograph.
– A copy of the passport bio-data page (passport must be valid for at least six months).
– A valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
– Additional documents may be required based on the visa category, such as an invitation letter or travel itinerary.

After completing the form and uploading the necessary documents, submit your application and pay the applicable visa fee online using a MasterCard or Visa card.

Applications are typically processed within 2-3 working days. Upon approval, an approval letter (Travel Authorization) will be emailed to you. Print this letter and present it, along with your passport, upon arrival in Uganda.

Visa Types and Fees:
– Single Entry Visa: Valid for up to 90 days; fee is USD 50.
– East Africa Tourist Visa: Allows multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days; fee is USD 100.
– Multiple-Entry Visas: Available for 6, 12, or 24 months; fees range from USD 100 to USD 200, depending on the duration.

Important Notes:
– Submit your visa application at least 14 days before your intended travel date to allow sufficient processing time. Ideally, you submit it even earlier to avoid any unforeseen problems.
– Nationals from certain countries are exempt from visa fees and can obtain a visa upon arrival. A list of these countries is available on the Uganda Immigration website.
– Ensure you apply through the official Uganda e-Visa portal to avoid scams. The official website is https://visas.immigration.go.ug/.

Also visiting Kenya and Rwanda?

The East Africa Tourist Visa is an excellent option for travelers planning to visit Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda on the same trip. It allows multiple entries between all three countries within a 90-day period, making it ideal for overland journeys or regional exploration.

This visa must be applied for through the country of first entry. For example, if you’re starting your trip in Uganda, you should apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa through the Ugandan e-Visa system. The visa costs USD 100 and cannot be extended beyond 90 days.

To apply, select “East Africa Tourist Visa” as your visa type during the application process. The required documents are similar to a regular visa application:

• A passport-size photo

• A copy of your passport bio-data page

• Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

• Your travel itinerary or booking confirmation showing planned entry into at least two of the three countries

Please note: you must not exit the East African region (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda) during the validity period — doing so will invalidate the visa.

This visa simplifies your trip and saves you money compared to applying for separate visas for each country.

We believe in fair and transparent pricing. In accordance with our Travel Conditions, iDrive4x4 applies the following cancellation fees based on the number of days before your departure:

• Up to 56 days before departure: 20% cancellation fee
• 55-22 days prior to departure: 50% cancellation fee
• 21-7 days prior to departure: 75% cancellation fee
• 0-6 days prior to departure: 100% cancellation fee

Dry Seasons (December to February and June to August):
The dry seasons are the ideal time for most activities, including gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. The lack of rain means easier trekking conditions and better chances of spotting wildlife as animals gather around water sources. It’s also an excellent time for game drives in Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park and boat safaris on the Nile or Kazinga Channel.

Wet Seasons (March to May and September to November):
While the wet seasons bring occasional heavy rains, they are also the most beautiful, as Uganda’s landscapes become lush and green. Bird watchers will find this period particularly rewarding, as migratory species join Uganda’s rich birdlife. Fewer crowds make the wet seasons a good choice if you want to travel in more isolation. However, be prepared for muddy roads and some challenges with off-road driving.
