Hiking the Balcony Walk in Oman: My Favourite Trek at Jebel Shams

If you’re planning a trip to Oman and love the outdoors, the Balcony Walk at Jebel Shams is something you can’t miss. It’s one of the most rewarding short hikes I’ve ever done. Not just because of the views, but also the experience of getting there! The route hugs the cliffs of Wadi An Nakhur, one of the deepest canyons in the Middle East, and leads to an abandoned mountain village that feels lost in time.
But what really makes it special? For me, it’s that this hike is part of something bigger: a self-drive 4×4 rooftop tent adventure across Oman. The freedom to camp near the trail, wake up to mountain views, and explore off-the-beaten-track spots like this. That’s what makes 4×4 rooftop tents trips like this unique.

Reaching the Trailhead: Why You Need a 4×4
To start the Balcony Walk, you’ll need to drive up Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain. The paved road ends near the Jebel Shams Resort, but to reach the actual trailhead at Al Khitaym village, you’ll continue on a steep gravel track. This is where a proper 4×4 is essential, especially one with high clearance and solid tyres.
I always recommend doing this as part of a longer road trip. That way, you’re not rushing back to a hotel or town. With our rooftop tent and gear, you can sleep right near the trail and enjoy the sunset over the cliffs.
You’ll find wild camping spots near Jebel Shams listed in our off-road guidebook and iGuide4x4 GPS app. Check out this blog for more info.

What the Balcony Walk Is Like (W6 Trail)
The trail is officially called the W6 route and is well-marked with painted flag symbols. It starts gently through the rocky village of Al Khitaym before following a ledge cut into the canyon wall. The view is incredible: sheer cliffs dropping away to the valley floor over 1,000 metres below.
After about 3.5 km (1 hour), you’ll reach the abandoned village of As Sab (also known as Sab Bani Khamis). It once housed around 15 families, with terraced farms, livestock, and even a flour mill. You can still see their stone homes clinging to the cliffside, framed by acacia and juniper trees.
Near the village, there’s a path leading to a hidden water pool and cave (Bi’r Dakhilyah) — a perfect picnic spot. There’s also a via ferrata climbing route nearby, but that’s only for properly equipped climbers.
The full round-trip took me about 3.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

Why This Hike Fits Perfectly in a Rooftop Tent Trip
This hiking route easily fits into a wider off-road journey through Oman. After hiking, you’re free to relax, cook dinner, and sleep under the stars, with no hotel booking needed. The area around Jebel Shams is rugged and peaceful, and the night skies are unreal.
This is exactly the kind of experience we design our iDrive4x4 adventures for: freedom, flexibility, and access to places most tourists miss.
